Field notes · Drinking less

Does alcohol cause belly fat?

The beer belly is real, but not quite for the reason most men think. It is less about beer and more about everything that travels with it.

How it adds up

Alcohol has about seven calories per gram, nearly as much as fat. A pint of regular beer is around 200 calories or more. Three a night is a small meal you do not notice eating.

Then there is the food. Drinking lowers your restraint and makes salty, fatty food more appealing. The chips, the late pizza, the big breakfast the next morning.

Why it lands on the belly

Men tend to store extra fat around the middle, and that tendency grows after forty. Heavier drinking is linked in studies with a larger waist. Poor sleep after drinking also raises hunger the next day. It is a loop, not a single cause.

What to do

Cut the number of drinking days before the number of drinks. Swap some drinks for alcohol-free versions. Eat a proper meal before you go out. And measure your waist once a month, because it moves before the scale does.

Common questions

Will I lose belly fat if I stop drinking?
Many people do, especially if alcohol was a large share of their calories. Results depend on overall diet, activity and sleep.
Is wine better than beer for belly fat?
Calories and quantity matter more than the type of drink. A large glass of wine can carry as many calories as a beer.
