What is habit stacking?

Short answer

Habit stacking means attaching a new habit to something you already do every day. After your first coffee, walk for 15 minutes. After you brush your teeth, stand still for five. The old habit is the cue, so you stop relying on memory or motivation.

Who this is for

Anyone whose good intentions fade by lunchtime.

Why does it work?

In the habit-formation study, volunteers did one behaviour daily in the same context, for example after breakfast. Those who repeated it more consistently showed a clearer habit pattern.

How do I build one?

  • Pick a solid anchor you never miss
  • Name the exact new action
  • Keep it under five minutes to begin
  • Say it aloud: After I ___, I will ___

What are good anchors?

Coffee, brushing teeth, parking the car, closing the laptop, the kids' bedtime.

Common questions

How many habits can I stack?
Start with one, then add another after two weeks.
What if my anchor changes?
Pick a new one and restart the count.
Is this the same as the 2% Solution?
It is how you deliver it: small blocks, each tied to a daily anchor.

It's that pattern interrupt right, that's catching yourself before you trigger the habit and follow through for that little dopamine hit. And so I love all your leveraging science but also using some very practical insights to support people with this. And I gotta ask you then so where does this philosophy around pain come in? Because I think you got a really unique idea around that, where you talk about turning pain into fuel. Can you talk a bit about that philosophy and I guess, to continue the example, like, how would you use this philosophy to support someone that's got the attention problem? For sure. So I am a huge component about morning routine. So I challenge people to do two things one for the mind, one for the body, and they can choose.
