How long does it take to form a habit?

Short answer

Longer than 21 days, and it varies a lot. In a well-known University College London study of 96 volunteers, the median time to reach automatic behaviour was 66 days, with a range from 18 to 254 days. Plan on two to three months for a simple habit, and more if it is hard.

By Dai Manuel, CrossFit L2, HYROX L2, Precision Nutrition, NeuroChange Practitioner. Last reviewed 26 September 2026.

Who this is for

Anyone starting a new routine.

Where does 21 days come from?

It is a myth with no study behind it. The number to trust comes from the Lally study.

What helped?

Volunteers did their chosen behaviour in the same context each day. Those who did it more consistently showed a clearer habit pattern.

What does that mean for me?

Expect the first month to take effort, and keep the action small. Fifteen minutes beats an ambitious plan.

Common questions

Is 66 days a rule?
No. It is a median, and the study's own range is wide.
Does exercise take longer than food habits?
Often, since it asks more of you.
What if I miss a day?
Get back to it the next day. Never miss two in a row.

Chapter 8: Whole Life Fitness Power 30: Crafting A Better You in Just Half an Hour Daily

In 2009, philippa Lally performed a study focusing on how habits are formed. Her study went on to find that those who participated took anywhere from 18 to 254 days to get to the point where they were automatic with performing the actions, aka habits, but the average was 66. Interesting, right. Another note in the book you'll also get a guide to help you set a specific goal and really get smart with it. And if you're not familiar with that acronym is being specific, making sure it's measurable, also actionable, realistic and time frame. So smart is an acronym for goal setting as well, as we give you a great chart to track your before measurements as well as after measurements. And I always, always, always, always encourage people take a before photo. Just get yourself in a bathing suit or swimsuits, whatever it is, and have someone take photos of you.

Everyone's going to say this is science backed Right. And I'm like, well, what study did you do? Well, you know, me and some buddies, we were in the backyard and we had to study and anyways, um, I joke. But I always just say it doesn't matter, don't worry about how long it takes, just keep doing it Right, because it actually gets to a place where you just stop thinking about it. It's just part of who you are, you know, because, like, really, an integral identity keys even. You know, like I'm active every day, every day, yeah, sure, I'm going to the gym every day, but I do like to move my body with purpose daily. Oh, yeah, I don't think about it and that's like a habit of mine and I'm curious what, what? So it's twofold question here. It's one.

Unlock Your Brain's Hidden Power: How the Law of Accommodation Can Transform Your Life!

So let's get a little bit scientific here. The law of accommodation is closely linked to neuroplasticity. This is our brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. A study published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience highlighted that our brains constantly adapt, allowing us to learn new skills and recover from injuries. It's like our brain is the super flexible, ever-changing muscle that gets stronger and more efficient the more we use it. Bring this to life. Think about learning to play a musical instrument like the guitar. At first, your fingers fumble, your brain struggles to remember the chords, but with consistent practice, your brain rewires itself and soon playing becomes second nature.

How long it really takes to get back in shape

Six numbers, ten minutes. You cannot argue with them in week seven and they will keep you honest in week two when nothing looks different. Then pick the smallest week you will actually repeat. Three sessions, a protein target, a step target, and a bedtime. Repeat it for sixty days. Retest. That is the whole method, and it is boring on purpose. How long does it take to get back in shape? Most men who train three to four times a week feel different within two weeks, feel stronger within four to six weeks, and start to look different somewhere between weeks eight and twelve. Sixty days of honest consistency is enough to change your baseline. It is not enough to finish the job. How long does it take if you have not trained in years? Longer to look different, faster to feel different.

How long it really takes to get back in shape

And why most timelines lie to you. Thirty years of coaching, one cohort of twenty-three men, and every number I have, including the ones that do not flatter me. FIG. 01 The unglamorous part nobody photographs. The honest answer to how long it takes to get back in shape is this: you will feel different in about two weeks, you will be measurably stronger in about six, and you will look different somewhere between weeks eight and twelve. If you are over forty and you have been out of it for years, put those numbers at the slower end and stop reading the ones that promise otherwise. Every "six week transformation" you have seen is measuring the wrong thing at the wrong time. It measures the photo. The photo is the last thing to change. That gap, between the day the work starts paying and the day it becomes visible, is where almost every man I have coached has quit.
