How do I find my why?

Short answer

Start by asking why fitness matters to you and what prompted you to seek change. Explore what you want to improve: your health, family life, relationships, or ability to move freely and enjoy life. Your why is personal. Connect with what genuinely matters to you, decide to follow through, and keep that reason in mind.

Who this is for

For dads who want to get fitter but need a personal reason to follow through, beyond simply feeling they should.

Where do I start finding my why?

Start by asking why fitness matters to you and what prompted you to seek change. Something brought you here. Respect that impulse. Are you looking for better health, more vitality, or the freedom to move and enjoy life? Your first answer might be about appearance. That can be a starting point, but also explore whether there is something else in your life you want to make better.

What actually matters to me?

Look beyond the workout and consider the life you want fitness to support. Maybe that means playing with your kids, supporting a healthy relationship with your partner, or being able to try a new activity. Maybe it means staying able to travel and enjoy life as you get older. Your why is personal. It does not have to look like anyone else's. Connect it to what you genuinely care about, rather than borrowing somebody else's motivation.

What do I do once I know my why?

Make the decision to follow through. Finding your reason is part of it; acting on that desire for change is the next part. Keep your reason at the front of your mind and let it guide your choices. This is about fitness supporting the health, relationships, movement and enjoyment that matter to you. Keep honouring that why.

Common questions

Can wanting to look better be my why?
Appearance can be your starting motivation. Also explore whether you want fitness to support something else, such as your health, family life or ability to move freely.
Does my why have to be about my family?
No. Your reason is personal and might centre on health, relationships, travel or enjoying movement. Connect with what genuinely matters to you.
What if I still do not know my why?
Return to what prompted you to look for change. Ask what you want to improve in your life and how fitness connects with that.

Chapter 2: Transforming Struggles into Strength: The Power of Finding Your 'Why'

Finding your why, finding your own why, is the most important factor to achieving long-term whole-life fits, and it's important to remember that that's going to look different for everyone. Everybody needs to explore their own particular reasons for becoming fit and make the decision to follow through. It all boils down to feeling as well as fueling the desire to make change and then doing it. So what do you need to ask yourself? There's a reason why you started looking for answers, whether in this book or elsewhere. Respect that impulse. Perhaps it's centered on your physical health and vitality, and that's great. At the same time, examine whether there's another issue in your life that you want to make better, be it a situation in your family, your finances or your faith. What motivates us for life? Think about why fitness matters to you.

Chapter 2: Transforming Struggles into Strength: The Power of Finding Your 'Why'

For others, such as those who have suffered heart attacks or who have life-threatening illnesses such as diabetes, the why might be a basic desire to live. For some of us, the deeper motivation stems from a desire to support a healthy relationship with our romantic partner. Christie and I are strong believers in the same. Couples who sweat together, stay together. In my work, I've met a lot of accomplished business executives in their 40s, many who are once football or hockey players who, but who are now 50 pounds overweight. Their daily choices over the past decade have taken them a long way from their original lifestyle, usually to a detriment of their fitness.

Chapter 2: Transforming Struggles into Strength: The Power of Finding Your 'Why'

The reality for many of us is that we can't travel as much as we like when we're in our prime and midlife years. We work full time, we have families to provide for and older parents who need our time and energy. If you want to be able to see the world you retire, you'll need to be fit and healthy when you reach that age. Whether your idea of great travel experiences rise in early to watch the Lions room freely while on safari in Africa, or stripping down to your swimsuit to wallow in warm Caribbean waters you'll get more out of it if your body is optimal state of health. Even to achieve optimal health is undoubtedly solid reason to exercise. Now I know that people have different ideas of what optimal health means. For me, health is about feeling good.

One year of putting my mental health first

The day I chose to follow my bliss and carve out a path that allows me to maximize my experience of happiness, filling my life with joy and fulfillment, was a distant memory.
